Coachella 2026: 30 benches, two states, two weeks
The festival needed 30 seven-foot benches — exactly the 3D-printed benches outdoor events keep ordering — printed in recycled PETG reinforced with glass fiber, produced across two states, and delivered within two weeks. Furniture maker Decibel and Italian LFAM specialist Caracol split the run between facilities. The lesson is distributed production: when the deadline is fixed, printing near the venue beats shipping finished goods. LAMÁQUINA: 38 surf panels, zero molds
For the Odachi restaurant in Kuwait, studio LAMÁQUINA printed 38 wave-pattern wall panels, each more than two meters tall — 3D printed furniture without molds in the most literal sense. The filament was recycled PETG with 30% glass fiber. A curved, site-specific interior that would have demanded a dozen one-off molds was instead a set of files and a print schedule. The panels were sized to the site's actual walls, not to a catalog — dimensional freedom is the point of the workflow.
Full Size on Day One: What the Machine Has to Deliver
Full-size furniture printing is demanding, and the requirements split into four bars that an industrial FDM 3D printer has to clear before your drawings go near the build plate.
Build volume
For anyone comparing a large-format 3D printer for furniture, envelope is the first spec. Orient load paths along the print direction — a leg printed upright carries compression far better than one printed lying down.
Finishing
Layer lines are a design decision, not a defect. Some surfaces ship as-printed; others get a sand-and-paint pass. The discipline is deciding which is which before quoting, so post-processing sits inside the price instead of appearing after it.
Load-test before the first sale
Custom furniture manufacturing 3D printing needs proof before the first sale: chairs carry people, and nobody learns that from a slicer preview. Print three, load-test them, then release the run. A printed test piece is cheaper than a recall.
When printing beats molding
The boundary is honest. Compare the 3d printing furniture cost per unit against the mold amortized over volume — the crossover point is where the line sits.
